Recognizing
and understanding the electrical hazards at a terminal facility are vital
to protecting personnel and property. On Monday morning, a panel of
experts will discuss three topics relating to safe electrical and static
control work practices at terminal facilities. Michael Harris, automation
and controls manager for the terminals group of Flint Hills Resources, LP,
will discuss the key elements of an electrical safety program (ESP) to
help improve safety performance relative to electrical hazards in the
workplace. He will also describe some of the challenges associated with
implementing an effective ESP. The second panelist, Graham Tyers,
President and CEO of Newson Gale Inc., will discuss static grounding and
bonding of mobile vehicles and equipment inside a terminal. He will
highlight recent developments in intrinsically safe bonding and grounding
technology that have enabled systems to be designed for use on specialized
vehicles and mobile plant equipment including chemical spill and waste
recovery service trucks, cleaning and maintenance operations, evacuating
chemicals from reactors, storage tanks and containers, metering and
calibration systems, vacuum trucks, and emergency response for hazardous
or flammable tankers. Chip Breitweiser, Vice President of Sales for HMT,
will discuss lightning protection at terminals and current methods for
preventing a lightning-induced ignition of an aboveground storage tank.
He will also provide an update on the API Recommended Practice 545
addressing lightning protection for aboveground storage tanks.
