Michigan

JUNE 2010

Corps Rejects Closing Chicago-Area Waterways to Block Asian Carp  In two reports released on June 4, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers rejected several proposals to close locks on Chicago-area waterways to prevent the migration of Asian carp into Lake Michigan.  In the reports, the agency noted that it currently does not have enough evidence that there is an imminent threat that a sustainable population of Asian carp could establish itself in Lake Michigan if the locks are not closed.

APRIL 2010

Supreme Court Dismisses Michigan Lawsuit to Close Chicago-Area Locks On April 26, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a proposal by Michigan’s Attorney General Mike Cox to reopen an 80-year-old case involving water rights as a way to stop the migration of Asian carp into Lake Michigan.  Cox had asked the court to reconsider the original rules governing the flow of water between the Mississippi River system and the Great Lakes.

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court denied two separate requests by Michigan for an order to close two Chicago-area waterway locks to keep the carp out of the lakes.  Legislation that would order the closure of the locks has been introduced in the House and in the Senate.

Wisconsin

NOVEMBER 2009

ILTA Submits Comments to Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) Relating to Rim Seal Gap Allowances for Floating Roof Tanks WDNR inspectors have been instructed to cite facilities for seal gaps on domed floating roof tanks.  This would be inconsistent with existing federal rules which do not impose a gap limit on internal floating roof tanks (IFR).  By definition a “domed” floating roof tank is an IFR.  On November 25, submitted comments to WDNR addressing the issue.
