Ultrasonic Inspection of Unpiggable Terminal Lines and Piping

Jan Pols, Applus RTD

9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.

Ageing pipelines at terminals, designed and built several decades ago, were until recently hard to inspect.  This was due to their layout, ID geometry changes or the fact that no pig launch or receive facilities existed in these sections.  This presentation will describe a few solutions to enter “non-inspectable” terminal piping and pipelines to check their condition by using special small diameter cable operated tools.  These small crawler tools apply ultrasonics to quantify wall thickness and corrosion.

Meeting the Challenges of Biofuels Blend Measurements with Portable Analyzers

Sandy Rintoul, Wilks Enterprise, Inc.

10:05 a.m. - 10:35 a.m.

As more mandates for a minimum of ethanol in gasoline and biodiesel in diesel come into effect, a large number of major oil companies are blending higher percentages of biofuels at their terminals.  Portable fixed filter analyzers offer a quick, on-site analytical method for measuring the percent ethanol or biodiesel.  This presentation will highlight tests for ethanol blend that were performed on over 15 different types of gasoline and the accuracy of the results.

Ground Improvement for Terminal Expansion - What are my options and how do I chose?

Marty Taube, P.E., DGI-Menard, Inc.

10:40 a.m. - 11:10 a.m.

Before terminal expansion and construction can begin, companies must be sure that the site is stable.  The settlement for similarly sized tanks at different locations may vary from an inch or less to 10 feet or more, depending on the range of ground conditions.  This presentation will outline ground improvement options including soil densification, soil reinforcement techniques and vertical drains.  Photos will be shown that illustrate poor site conditions and the technology used to improve the site conditions.

Accuracy Affect on Return on Investment

Josh Rose, FMC Technologies Inc.

11:15 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.

Now, more than ever, accuracy is critically important to the petroleum industry.  Accuracy is a seemingly easy concept but determining the precise volume measured, even with a high quality custody transfer meter, can be challenging.  This presentation will focus on the standards, procedures and methods used to achieve the highest accurate measurement that will help to provide a sense of security and, in turn, could improve a company’s bottom line.

Terminal Planning and Design with the Implementation of Risk Management Systems

Cristhian Rodriguez, Halcrow, Inc.

12:45 p.m. - 1:15p.m.

The planning and design of terminals (LNG, crude, oil product, etc.) with the use of risk management based on ISO 9000 and the Security Management Process can help facilitate regulatory compliance.  This presentation will highlight the importance of a risk management approach to help prevent the occurrence or minimize the consequences of accidents at facilities, especially those that handle hazardous substances.
