How did you first become involved in the terminal industry? Share a bit about that journey.

When I was transitioning from the Coast Guard to a civilian career, I was primarily searching for opportunities in the maritime industry since I held a Master's license. My family and I were relocating to the Capital Region of New York, and as you can imagine, there are only so many vessels in the area looking for captains, so I expanded my search to the broader marine industry.

At the time, Sprague was hiring for a Marine Terminal Manager Trainee position. My Coast Guard experience was focused on Leading Search and Rescue and Law Enforcement teams, so I didn't know much about the terminal industry. However, as I researched both the position and Sprague, I became increasingly interested in the opportunity.

I joined Sprague and spent about six years at the Rensselaer terminal, progressing through roles and eventually becoming Terminal Manager. That experience gave me a strong appreciation for the people, operations, and importance of the industry. Today, I serve as Director of Terminal Operations, overseeing Sprague's terminals across New York and Western Massachusetts. Looking back, expanding my search beyond a traditional seagoing career turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is the people. From the hardworking employees in our terminals to the teams in the corporate office, Sprague is filled with talented individuals who work exceptionally well together. I especially enjoy getting out into the terminals and spending time with our frontline employees who are extremely dedicated and hardworking. No matter the challenge, there's a strong sense of teamwork, camaraderie, and mutual respect across the company. We work hard, support one another, share plenty of laughs, and have fun along the way, which makes coming to work every day enjoyable.

What advice would you offer to someone just starting out with a liquid terminal company?

Ask questions and learn, learn, learn.  There is so much behind what we do and how we do it.  I am still learning things today about our industry, what we do, and how we do it and why.  The minute you stop learning is the minute you stop developing.

What would you say to a young person to encourage them to pursue a future career with a liquid terminal company?

I was in your shoes ten years ago, and I couldn't be happier with the decision I made. Not only are these good jobs with excellent opportunities for growth, but they also provide a service that our country depends on every day, often without people even realizing it. The liquid terminal industry plays a critical role in keeping communities, businesses, and transportation systems running. If you're looking for a career you can be proud of, one that offers continuous learning, growth opportunities, and the chance to make a meaningful impact, then the liquid terminal industry is a great place to be.

How do you think the industry will continue to change over the next 5, 10, or 20 years?

Our industry is constantly evolving to serve our products more efficiently and safely, and to meet our continuously evolving customer needs.

What is your level of involvement with ILTA?

I feel like I am pretty involved in ILTA now and look forward to even more involvement as my career progresses.  I attend most of the joint committee meetings throughout the year, try not to miss out on TOPS, and attend the Conference & Trade Show in Houston most years.  Between my co-workers, we try to always have representation and attendance at these events.  I also take part in some working groups and industry calls throughout the year that ILTA puts together.

What’s your favorite part of being involved with ILTA?

What I find most beneficial about being involved with ILTA, besides the representation and advocacy it provides in governmental and regulatory areas, is the opportunity to work alongside peers from across the industry. While our companies may compete in the marketplace, ILTA brings us together to share lessons learned, best practices, and innovative ideas. By learning from one another's experiences, including mistakes and incidents, we can continuously improve our operations, enhance employee safety, and better protect the communities we serve. That spirit of collaboration for the greater good of the industry is what I value most about ILTA.

Do you belong to any community or civic organizations you’d like to mention?

Yes, I serve on the board of our local baseball league as the VP of Facilities.  Our board works hard all year to ensure a positive baseball experience for the youth of our town.  Maintaining the fields and improving them has become a passion of mine of the last 5 or 6 years.

Do you have any hobbies or interests you’d like to mention?

I love to play golf, but in the last few years the time on the golf course has decreased as the time on the sidelines has increased.  I have two wonderful young children, who keep my wife and me busy as they are very active in youth sports throughout the year.  It is a true pleasure to watch them and be there for them.

Anything additional you'd like to add?

Thank you for the opportunity to share my story!
