PFAS Hill Day

The ILTA Advocacy efforts to prevent bad PFAS policy continue. The ILTA team continued outreach to Capitol Hill about the impact of bad PFAS policy on the liquid terminal industry. The ILTA Team, supported by volunteer ILTA Member Advocates continues pressing Capitol Hill about the implications of PFAS regulation. On July 19, 20, and 21, ILTA held another “virtual fly-in.” The purpose of this fly-in was to specifically focus advocacy efforts on the United States House of Representatives’ Committee on Energy and Commerce, Subcommittee on the Environment. This is the Committee with primary responsibility for EPA and for establishing meaningful PFAS policy. The ILTA Team was joined by several Member company representatives to help make the case for why liquid terminals need a reasonable transition period to PFAS-free firefighting foams.

The fly-in also focused on the implications of PFAS being a triggering contaminant for Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), or Superfund liability. ILTA continues advocating and making the case to the Biden Administration and on Capitol Hill that using Superfund will negatively impact the economic well-being of liquid terminal facilities. During the fly-in, ILTA was encouraged to learn that several offices remained receptive to alternatives to Superfund for liquid terminals. ILTA is continuing its advocacy efforts in August, too.
