Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Updates

On July 21, ILTA’s Security Committee hosted a meeting with Captain Andy Meyers and Lieutenant Commander Jeff Bender from the United States Coast Guard (USCG) about the recent informal announcement of another delay to the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Reader Rule.

In ILTA’s June alert, ILTA included information about the delay of the TWIC Reader Rule. Specifically, the federal government’s Spring Unified Regulatory Agenda was released and included an entry by the USCG that there would be at least another 3-year delay in implementation of the TWIC Reader Rule.  While this only announces the Coast Guard's plan for a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to delay the Reader Rule, ILTA is working to help organize its members’ input into this important issue. To educate ILTA Members and to understand the USCG’s position on the anticipated delay, ILTA hosted a candid and informative meeting with the USCG on July 21.

Although the extension is not guaranteed, there will be some critical steps in which ILTA Members will need to participate and make their voices heard. To further the discussion and inform ILTA Members, there will be further dialog with USCG (which confirmed attendance) at the upcoming ILTA Fall 2022 EHS&S and TOPS Meetings in Boston, MA on September 20-22. For more information about the meeting including registration and hotel information, please visit Meeting Information Link for EHS&S & TOPS Fall 2022. We hope you can join us for this and other important discussions.
