RFA Highlights the Key Issues and Challenges Facing the Renewable Fuels Industry

On March 21, ILTA hosted an Energy Evolution webinar featuring Troy Bredenkamp, Executive Vice President of Public Policy, and Justin Schultz, Director of Environment, Health & Safety at the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA). Troy and Justin have decades of experience in policy and industry, leading the development and implementation of a wide range of initiatives to support both the RFA’s mission and the broader needs of the renewable fuels industry. The webinar featured a conversation with Troy and Justin about how the current administration and Congress are influencing policies affecting the renewable fuels market, RFA’s outlook on key opportunities and challenges, and how the association’s members are adapting to changes that also impact bulk liquid storage, handling, and distribution.

The webinar began with an overview of RFA’s core mission and top policy priorities. Key topics included future Renewable Volume Obligations (RVOs) under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), the push for year-round E15 sales, and efforts to preserve tax credits that support the production and blending of renewable fuels. Troy and Justin also covered additional policy areas with impacts on renewable fuel producers, such as the Farm Bill, the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program (HBIIP), and the potential for a national clean fuel standard. They addressed several challenges as well, including the industry’s transition from AFFF to fluorine-free foams (F3), small refinery exemptions (SREs) under the RFS, and the burdens imposed by restrictive trade regulations on imports and exports. To close the session, Troy and Justin fielded audience questions, offering insights into key policy developments affecting renewable fuel producers and highlighting areas where RFA and ILTA can align and collaborate moving forward.
