How did you first become involved in the terminal industry?

HR is one of the few professions that transcends industries. While the core principles and employment laws remain consistent, success in HR requires curiosity, agility, and the ability to align people strategy with industry-specific needs. Over the years, I have worked in retail, education, non-profit, and even federal contracting. After seven years in an industry hit hard by COVID, I was ready for something new, something that would challenge me and reignite my sense of purpose. When I saw the opening at Howard Energy Partners on LinkedIn, the name, the Core Values, and the company’s reputation immediately stood out. I did my research, and the more I learned, the more I thought, “I want in.” The energy industry was new to me, but the people, the mission, and the momentum made it an easy decision.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is helping people see the bigger picture and how their work connects to something meaningful. I love building strategies that not only support business goals but also create space for people to grow, lead, and thrive. Watching someone step into their potential, knowing HR helped pave the way? That never gets old.

What advice would you offer to someone just starting their career with a liquid terminal company?

Be curious. Ask questions. Learn how your role fits into the larger operation. This industry is full of complexity and constant change, which means there is always something new to discover. Build relationships across teams and stay open to growth. The more you lean in, the more rewarding your journey will be.

What would you say to a young person to encourage them to pursue a future career with a liquid terminal company?

This industry is far more exciting than most people realize. It is where innovation, sustainability, and real-world impact come together. Whether you’re into IT, HR, business development, strategy, operations, engineering, or people, you can find a place in the industry. Plus, you get to be part of something that truly keeps the world moving.

How have you seen the industry change over the course of your career?

The industry is becoming more agile and forward-thinking. There is a stronger focus on innovation, energy advocacy, and public engagement. These shifts are reshaping how we think about workforce strategy and demanding new skills, more flexible teams, and a deeper alignment between people and purpose.

How do you think the industry will continue to change over the next 5, 10, or 20 years?

I see continued transformation through automation, digitalization, and a growing emphasis on sustainability. These changes will redefine how we work and who we need on our teams. From an HR perspective, it is about staying ahead and attracting the right talent, fostering continuous learning, and building cultures that can adapt and thrive.

What is your level of involvement with ILTA?

I am an active ILTA member and had the privilege of presenting a session at the 2025 Conference & Trade Show. I also hosted a career booth in the expo hall, which was a fantastic way to connect with talent. I regularly turn to ILTA’s news and resources to stay informed and learn about the evolving energy landscape.

What’s your favorite part of being involved with ILTA?

I love how ILTA brings people together across disciplines. As an HR leader, it is refreshing to be in the room with operational and technical leaders, contributing a people-first perspective to conversations that often focus on infrastructure and compliance. Speaking at the 2025 Conference was a highlight as it gave me a chance to spotlight the strategic role HR plays in this industry.

Do you belong to any community or civic organizations you’d like to mention?

I proudly serve as Vice President of the San Antonio Pipeliner’s Association, where I enjoy both the peer networking and the fundraising events that support local causes. I am also a part-time faculty member in the School of Business at Trinity University, where I have the privilege of educating future leaders. Additionally, I am the Past President of the San Antonio Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and previously served as Director of HR Certification for Texas SHRM—both roles reflect my commitment to advancing the HR profession and reinforcing the strategic value of people leadership across industries.

Do you have any hobbies or interests you’d like to mention?

I love being outdoors, swimming, hiking, or heading to the shooting range with my family. I will admit, I am not the best shot, but I really enjoy clay shooting. On slower days, I am all about a good binge-watch, especially anything post-apocalyptic or dystopian. Those moments help me recharge so I can bring my best to the people I support.

Anything additional you’d like to add?

I am genuinely excited to keep learning and growing in this industry. Organizations like ILTA make that possible by creating space to connect, share, and stay engaged. I look forward to continuing the conversation with fellow members and contributing wherever I can. In the meantime, I invite members to connect with me via LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/jeri-g
