Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Updates

As ILTA Members know, there is much anticipation around the forthcoming U.S. Coast Guard announcement of a three-year extension to the TWIC Reader Rule. In July, ILTA’s Security Committee hosted a meeting with Captain Andy Meyers and Lieutenant Commander Jeff Bender from the United States Coast Guard (USCG) about the recent informal announcement of another delay to the TWIC Reader Rule. Captain Meyers and Lieutenant Commander Jeff Bender agreed to have the USCG present at the ILTA Fall EHS&S meeting in Boston to discuss this topic.

Meanwhile, in August, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) provided new changes to the TWIC enrollment process. TSA announced for current TWIC holders that TSA would allow for online enrollment, eliminating the need to go to an enrollment center, thereby, making the five-year renewal process more convenient.

ILTA is anticipating further action on TWIC by its September EHS&S meeting in Boston. Given all the changes and anticipated changes there will be significant time devoted to charting a path forward on TWIC. ILTA is hopeful that the Notice of Proposed Extension of the TWIC reader rule and comment period will be announced before the Boston meeting. If so, then there will be significant discussion amongst ILTA Members on next steps. ILTA Members in Boston will have a chance to discuss their concerns with the USCG (which confirmed attendance) at the upcoming ILTA Fall 2022 EHS&S and TOPS Meeting in Boston, MA on September 20-22. For more information about the meeting including registration and hotel information, please visit Meeting Information Link for EHS&S & TOPS Fall 2022. We hope you can join us for this and other important discussions.
